Reforming Culture Series: “Rooted in Sonship – Formed Through Discipleship”

The story of the Prodigal Son gives us a powerful picture of the heart of the Father. The son returns broken, ashamed, and fully aware of his failure. Yet while he is still a great way off, the father sees him, has compassion, runs toward him, embraces him, and restores him. The son came home prepared to negotiate for a servant’s position. The father responded by restoring him as a son. This is the Gospel! We are helpless to cure our own souls of sin. We cannot cleanse ourselves. There simply are not enough washcloths to wash away what only the mercy and grace of God can remove.

His Mercy is the doorway.

Sonship is the household.

Discipleship is the life we learn to live once we know we belong. We are accepted in the Beloved. Because of His mercy, we faint not. We do not have to give up or lose hope.

Sons by Grace

Sonship is not about gender; it speaks to identity, relationship, inheritance, and maturity. Grace gives us the identity. Following Christ forms the life. Sonship is the believer’s grace-given identity, belonging, inheritance, and relationship with the Father through Jesus Christ, the Eternal Son, by the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:15 reminds us that we have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, “Abba, Father.” Galatians 4:6 declares that because we are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba, Father.” We are received by the Father, through the Son, by the Holy Spirit. Sonship answers an essential question: Who am I in Christ before I do anything for Christ? I must know who I am in Christ before I attempt to do anything for Christ. Being before doing. Identity before activity. Relationship before responsibility.

I am no longer a stranger. I have been brought near as family. I am not standing outside the house trying to earn entrance. I am no longer under judgment. Through Christ, I have been received as His child.

Mercy Opens the Door. Mercy is God's compassionate action toward the undeserving. He withholds deserved judgment, meets human brokenness with love, and restores the person through grace. Mercy is holy love moving toward human need. Mercy is not sentimental softness. It is not God pretending that sin does not matter. Mercy recognizes the seriousness of our condition while providing what we could never provide for ourselves. Mercy rescues us. We are not destroyed by what we deserved. He forgives our offenses and opens the door. Then Sonship names us. The Father restores our relationship, gives us a place at His table, and declares: “You are Mine!”

Sonship Is Not Grace-Ranking! Sonship must never become another system of spiritual performance, entitlement, or comparison. These guardrails protect us from three dangerous distortions:

Performance — Sonship cannot be earned. We cannot achieve what the Father freely gives.

Presumption — Belonging does not excuse immaturity, disobedience, or resistance to formation.

Comparison — Sonship never creates a superior spiritual class. There is no attitude of superiority that can supersede the grace by which we were received. Sonship is received by grace and matured through formation.

Disciples by Formation - Matthew 28:19 moves us from identity into formation: “Go therefore and make disciples…” Discipleship is the daily formation of our lives into the Christlike way of living. We do not follow Jesus hoping that eventually He will love us. We follow Jesus because we have already been loved and received. Our failures do not erase the identity grace has given us. The Father does not stop being Father every time we stumble. Formation does not manufacture belonging. Formation matures the life that grace has already given. This changes the entire motivation for discipleship. We are not performing to become sons. We are being formed because we are sons. Grace establishes our identity. Discipleship matures our character.

Received. Formed. Represent. This is the movement of a life rooted in sonship and formed through discipleship:

RECEIVED — We belong to the Father. We are brought into the household through grace.

FORMED — We walk with the Son. Jesus teaches us how sons of the Kingdom think, love, obey, forgive, serve, and live.

REPRESENT — We embody His life. What Christ forms within us becomes visible through us. We are received before we are formed, and we are formed so that we can rightly represent Him. We become sons first—and from that secure identity, we become disciples who can disciple others.

The Central Truth

Sonship tells me WHO I am.

Discipleship forms HOW I live.

Representation reveals WHOSE I am.

The Father receives us through grace. The Son teaches us how to live. The Holy Spirit works within us to form the life of Christ. We do not work for belonging. We work from belonging. We do not obey so that we can become family. We obey because, through Christ, we have already been brought into the Father's house.

Mercy opened the door.

Grace gave us a name.

Sonship gave us a place.

Discipleship forms our life.

We are Sons by Grace and Disciples by Formation.
